Roots and Other Poems deftly dissects the layers of human psyche that represents the cultural phenomenon, especially in a rural backdrop. The poems are more about truth than beauty, more about wisdom than intellect and more about exposing cob-webs in orthodox human minds than artistry of words. There is a rhythm of deep meaning pervading all through the poems.
Pemji Prem (1943-1993) was one of the most prolific of the modern writers in Hadoti (Rajasthani). He published over a dozen books of poetry and fiction, and left behind a large volume of unpublished manuscripts. In his writings he strongly empathised with the socially deprived lot. He also had an immense passion for the theatre and for the folk culture in the Hadoti region of Rajasthan. He has been honoured with several awards for his contribution to the stage and literature. Premji Prem received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1991 for the present collection.
Arun Sedwal (1943) is an M. Phil. in Public Administration.
