Book Description

Introduction

Ayurveda the science of life has been catering to the needs of the diseased mankind since ages. Among the disciplines of Ayurveda, the science of Shalyatantra gave releif when medicines could not work or had its own limitations. Owing to this Shalyatantra has been given a great place of respect in the field of Ayurveda.

The science that was mastered by the Ashwini twins and brought to glory during the times of Sushrutha later lost its shine due to varied reasons. One among the many reasons being ab-sence of authoritative texts after Sushrutha Samhita

. The tradition of medicine (Kayachikitsa) continued to flourish with many new physicians contributing to the development of new methods of diagnosis, describing signs and symptoms of various latest diseases, inventive formulations for the man-agement of diseases and concretizing their knowledge by authoring texts of their own. But Shalyatantra had no or very few contributions by authors after Sushrutha. Rather than innovating and developing the science, the times of Buddhists, Mughals and British saw the total downfall of Shalyatantra. Lack of continued contributions in the form of new skills, instruments, methods of operative procedures, authoritative texts etc was a curse for the science of Shalyatantra. .

The students of the present times also have been facing the same problems. There have not been many books published which could provide the complete knowledge of Shalyatantra at one place. Especially texts in English are a rarity. My book, "Shalyatantra vijnana" is a small step towards providing complete knowledge of Shalyatantra to the students of this branch. I have included the description of various surgical diseases and operative procedures as available in the modern text as well as those available in our classics, giving greater importance to information available in Sushrutha samhita.

Thus I feel the students will find the text attravtive, knowedgefull and according to the syllabus prescribed by CCIM. I wish to acknowledge the texts of modern surgery, viz. Text Book of Surgery by S. Das, Text Book of Surgery by Bailey and Love and Manipal Text Book of Surgery from wherein I have collected the information about the modern surgery. I wish to thank Dr. Prasanna Rao, Principal, SDM College of Ayurveda, who took time off his busy schedule to contribute the foreword sectin of this book. I wish to acknowledge and thank Atul Gupta of M/S Chaukhambha Orientalia, Varanasi for his everlasting and constant support in publishing this book. Students and readers are the real critics of this book. Any opinions, criticisms about this book are always looked for-warded to. Expecting continued support and love from all the readers who have always encouraged my small steps in this field.
