Introduction Scientific thoughts of India Book 1 - Mathematics, by Dr. C. Krishnan Nambudiri, is a magnificent work on Indian Mathematics which covers from the 14th century B.C. to 19th century A.D. in time span. The present book is an English translation of the original Malayalam text 'Bharatiya Sastra Cinta Pusthakam - 1 Ganitam', by the author. Although this is not a history of Indian mathematics, it is a nice synopsis of the Indian contributions to the world mathematics and serves as an excellent survey of the subject for the benefit of general readers. At present very little is known to historians of mathematics regarding the achievements made by the ancient Indian mathematicians and our indebtedness to them. Through this book, the author wanted to bring it to the knowledge of modern scholars in mathematics, both Indian and western, the remarkable advancements in mathematics made by ancient and medieval Indians.
Preface This preface is humbly written on behalf of Bharatiya Samskriti Seva Ratnam. Dr. C. Krishnan Nambudiri, the great scholar in Science in Sanskrit literature and the author of more than 22 published research works based on the Scientific heritage of India in the Bharathiya Sastra Cinta Series, who breathed his last on 10th February 2019 at the age of 93 years. A year has passed since then. It is worth mentioning here that his very first book in the series itself namely Bharatiya Sastra Cinta, Pustakam-1, Ganitam (Mathematics) originally published in the Malayalam medium by Arshaprakasam Prasiddheekarana Samithi, Calicut- 1, Kerala in 1998 was widely accepted by the reading community and hence got reprinted as second and third editions respectively in 2008 and 2014. A copy of this book was handed over by the author himself for its English translation as requested by the faculty members of the teaching staff officiating as the office bearers of the Sree Sankara Samskarika Patanakendram of the Sree Sankara Vidyapeetom College, Perumbavoor, Kerala when he was honoured by them at the college by the prestigious Vijnanapeetapuraskaram on 19th February 2014.
