Preface

"Translation" as an art is an effective means of communication that can cause a remarkable change in human activities. The primal act of human understanding seems undeniable. In fact, it is only through translation of ideas from one language, culture or civilization that can receive a helping hand for the overall development of personality and society Hence, translation may be regarded as an art which acts as a vital factor for acceleration of the development, vastness of the knowledge and the achievement of not only national but international unity also. It is also an attempt to bring two alien cultures closer than before.

However, this study, which is originally a thesis submitted for the award of Ph. D degree in English at Dr. BRA University Agra and which is divided into various chapters is an attempts to bring out that howsoever graded and certified the translation may be, if there is no application of holistic approach to the original work, it will be of little significance. The outcome of this application is the translation is the translation that not only lets the translator know his knowledge and capability but also holistically orients the reader towards the rich heritages of language and culture of an alien region.

I sincerely acknowledge the impact of of my guide Dr. Manoj Kumar, Reader & Head, Deptt of English Research and Studies, S.V.P G. College, Aligarh whose wise criticisms and timely suggestions have been very useful in the preparation of the thesis which is now being presented as a published work.

I am also indebted to Sh. Ram Ji Yadav, Mr. Rajesh & Miss Suman for their timely help and support while the thesis was in preparation.

I extend my heart-felt thanks to Mr. Gajanand Sharma, Mr. Parveen, Mr. Hoshiar Singh for their all-time help in carrying out the difficult task of typing/proof reading etc.

Introduction

Recently we have stepped into the 21" century which was being eagerly awaited, by the whole world. Ours is one of those developing countries, which, with the arrival of the New Millennium, made a firm determination to keep pace with the world. The humanity has seen tremendous advances in this century. Unprecedented technological breakthroughs have been made in every field. New frontiers have been discovered in various areas. New possibilities have been explored. Formidable problems have been surmounted. Global barriers have been broken down People have bravely faced natural and man-made disasters of unfathomable dimensions- world wars, nuclear threats. famines and earthquakes, genocide and epidemics.

It is well known that during the last fifty years, India has made a multidimensional progress. No doubt, the speed of development might have been slow and we may not be satisfied with the negative consequences of this development, but the need of the hour is that after stepping into the New Millennium, India must accelerate the speed of her progress because the world has its eyes fixed on her Now, the time has come for the Indians to be known as the citizens of a 'Developed' nation instead of being addressed as the subjects of a 'developing country. And in order to achieve this goal, a proper attention is to be paid to the diversity of languages and thus not only make suitable plans for a proper use of our languages but also transgress the linguistic boundaries systematically, sincerely and constructively This is also a fact that one who is interested in a language or linguistic study cannot confine his interest to his native language only.
