Preface

Integrated area development is an interdisciplinary field of study in which most of the Social Scientists including regional planners & geographers search their roots of problem. The present attempt "Integrated area development: A Geographical analysis of Nalanda District: Bihar" is on block level study with a view to explore the resources within the bounds of the district and how far these resources have been developed to give stride to production and how to make vocational decisions bringing together infrastructures of economic development with social services for integrated regional development.

The Nalanda District includes Biharsharif and Hilsa subdivisions in which there are numerous villages and less than half a dozen urban centers varying in size and population. The study area is inhabited by sixteen lakh forty-one thousands, three hundred & twenty-five persons within two thousands, three hundred & sixty two Sq.K.M. areas. The Study is comprised in nine Chapters. The I Chapter depicts the conceptual framework, methodology including the vocational background.

Chapter II illustrates the Physical environments of the region. The third Chapter of study describes the human resources of the area based on secondary data. These data are being illustrated with the help of quantitative and cartographic techniques. In the fourth & fifth Chapters agricultural characteristics including the land use patterns are depicted. Chapter Six and Seven deal with the industrial resources and cultural features respectively. Chapter Eight deals with the urban problems of the area in which centrality, Hierarchy and spatial pattern of central places have been analyzed. The last part of this Chapter highlights the service regions of the study area.
