About the Author:

Prof. Johan Galtung is a famous social scientist of Narway. He was born in 1930. His Major disciplines in higher education were Mathematics and Statistics. Afterwards he got deeply interested in Social Sciences and Philosophy. He studied these subjects under Prof. Arne Naess with whom he wrote "Gandhi's Political Ethics. With this intellectual background of Gandhian thought he joined and University of Oslo as Professor of Peace & Conflict Research. He pursued this research with great zeal and scientific spirit. Soon he developed Peace Research Center at the national level. In January, 1866 it grew into an independent body, known as International Peace Research Institute. Its founder Johan Galtung give a concrete shape to its research activities through hard work and sagacity. He invited the scholars from different parts of the world and arranged Peace Research Conferences, organized lectures on the subjects like Theory of Peace, International Relations, Methodology of Peace Research, etc. He also pioneered a quarterly journal called " Journal of Peace Research."

With his immense scholarship on an inter-disciplinary subject like Peace Research, Johan Galtung has earned the fame of a world renowned Social Scientist and is associated with many universities.

Johan Galtung, being such an erudite scholar, served as a consultant to several international organizations also. He was a consultant to UNESCO on Peace Research, to the OCED on education and to the Council of Europe on European co-operation. He was also the special consultant for the second United Nations Special Session on Disarmament.

His profuse writings cover many subjects viz. Social Cosmologies, Agricultural Policies, Educational disparities, Human rights and needs, Typologies of development, Peace research and social structure etc.
