Preface

During 1965 there were fresh offensive activities by china on all parts of the border. In September, when India was locked in a battle with Pakistan, she went to the extent of issuing a seventy-two-hour ultimatum. The ultimatum was withdrawn eventually but the intrusions on India territory and military preparations continued unabated. It is now realised by all Indian leaders that conflict with China relates not concerns much wider areas and much wider isues and is likely to continue for a pretty long time.

In view of this situation, it is necessary that the people should have adequate information about the country which has such hostile intentions against them. This book, it is hoped, will serve that need. It gives information about the history of China, about her preent position under communist rule, about her relations with India, about the border problem and about the course of the 1962 invasion. It was first published immediately after the invasion under the title China Invades India. Since then the book has been thoroughly revised and also brought up-to-date. It covers events up to the end of 1965.

The book is written by four of us. We have drawn on all available sources for information and also in some case for interpretation of events. We are grateful to all of them for permission to draw upon them. We are particularly grateful to Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for publishing the book as part of Bhavan’s Book University.
