Demythsifying Myths (Demystifying 18 Myths About India)

Preface Growing up as a young boy or girl in India or even as a young man or lady, weren't you led to believe that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a "mahatma" (great-souled), he was father of our nation, the first prime minister was "chacha" (father's younger brother) Nehru, India is a 5000-year old nation, or that the Indian parliamentary system of democracy is a copy of the British Westminster system, or that Bofors, 2G and CoalGate were the biggest scams in Indian history? I most certainly have.

Have you ever asked how Gandhi was a Mahatma, or how Nehru was a Chacha? Or, for that matter, how the current Gandhis (Sonia and Rahul) got the surname Gandhi?

Despite having an in-depth understanding of politics and government for the past 30 years not just in India, but also politics/government of USA UK, and a few other countries, I never asked these questions, as I just presumed that whatever was told to us - either in textbooks or by our teachers or the elder relatives at home, were all true. It is only when my current business (social media market research) made me spend a lot of time on social media, that I realized I have been fooled.
