Book Description

Foreword
Melville Herskovits, an eminent enonomic anthropologist, had once described economic life as "essentially based on the broader organization of society", and it is from that position that most economic anthropologists begin their research journey. Economic anthropologists see individuals as "economic actors" and focus a good deal of their work around three areas: production, exchange, and consumption. The economic anthropologist often begins with the question of how a social group produces what it wants, how are the produced goods exchanged, and how these goods are consumed. Despite its importance in understanding the broader organization of society, as aptly remarked by Herskovits, published works on economic anthropology in India are few and far between. Therefore, the present monograph, "Designing Development for Tribal Regions-The Kashipur Experience" is a welcome addition to the existing scanty literature on economic anthropology.
