Book Description

About the Book

Drama according to Dhananjaya is the imitating of situations. It is called a show (rupa lit. form) because of the fact that it is seen. It is called representation (rupaka) because of the assumption (of parts by actors). It is ten-fold and is based on the sentiments. The ten chief varieties of drama are : The Nataka, the Prakarana, the Bhana, the Prahasana, the Dimas the Vyayoga, the Samavakara, the Vithi, the Amka (=Utsrstikanka) and the Thamrga. Pantomime (nrtya).

Karnyabharam and Madhyama-Vyayoga are two of the most famous plays (Rupaka) of great poet Bhasa. Whereas the main character in Karnabharam is Karna, in Madhyama-Vyayoga, it is Ghatotkaca. The main source of Karnabharam appears to come from the Kundalaharanapava under Vanaparva of Mahabharata and that of Madhyama-Vyayoga is based upon the story or Ghatotkaca (son of Bhima and Hidimba). The idea of the play appears to be reflected from Adiparva and Vanaparva.

Present hook is the first ever work comprising of both Hindi and English translation of these two plays as well as with detailed introduction.
