Book Description

About the Author

Kesavadasa (1558-1618 A.D.), resident of Orccha in Bundelkhanda, lived in the reign of Akbar and Jahangir and wrote abundantly in Hindi verse. Among his literary works, Rasikapriya, Kavipriya, Ramacandrika, Virasimhadevacarita alone can give him an undisputed place of rank in Hindi literature.

His Ramacandrika-a poetical composition on the story of Rama-is the true representative of his poetic genius. Beside furnishing the narrative, it provides superb descriptions of natural beauty related to rivers, lakes, forests, gardens, the rising sun and the seasons as also the descriptions of places and things. In such descriptions, full of fancy and metaphors, Kesava stands incomparable.

The present collection of verses from Ramacandrika is a true specimen of Kesava's poetic art. It displays not only his powers of narration and description but it also covers the nascent emotional afflatus of his young and mature age.

The text of verses in the present selection is rendered into roman script and is also accompanied by English version in verse. The English version is boldly characterized by felicitous expression, fine phrasing and melodious rhymes that are reminiscent of same features in the author's English version of Rasikapriya. The book is meant for general readers. It is beautifully illustrated, documented with critical apparatus including Introduction, Bibliography and Index.
