FOREWORD

Sikhism and The 21st Century is a collection of articles by eminent scholars from India and abroad reflecting on various aspects of Sikh philosophy, life and tradition. The present volume has been specially prepared by Dr. Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, President, Guru Gobind Singh Foundation Chandigarh for International Inter-Faith Conclave being held in London this year.

The work has a special relevance in the present perspective in quest of globalization of the people of the world into a world community. The exposition of the papers included in this Volume co-relates Sikh consciousness to global consciousness and explores the potentiality of Sikhism which can play a significant role in the twenty first century in serving humanity and building up the structure of a world community.

I am confident that the message provided in this Volume will offer significant material for the seekers of Inter-Faith Movement and unity of mankind. I am happy that, this book is being published by the Guru Nanak Dev University on its 28th Foundation Day.

Preface

The creation of the Khalsa Panth by the tenth and last Prophet of Sikh religion, Guru Gobind Singh, in 1699 A.D. at Sri Anandpur Sahib in Indian Punjab was a historic event with unique significance in world history and civilization.

Over the years the Guru Gobind Singh Foundation has been endeavouring to give to the 300th birth anniversary celebrations, in 1999, of the Khalsa an interfaith form and orientation by involving the people of the world in general and the faith followers of other religions in particular. In this context a Memorandum, signed, among others, by Sh. Inder Kumar Gujral (now our Prime Minister) was personally presented to the Secretary General of the U.NO. in New York in 1992, calling upon the United Nations to declare 1999 as the Year of Human Spirit for projecting the Message of Guru Gobind Singh that all humanity is one in spirit.
