Book Description

Preface

It is now nearly three years that we published the first part of our Vedic selections entitiled "Srutisancayanam" with the original mantras. their padapatha, English translation, and commentaries by Sayana and Skandasvamin. We had promised to bring out the next part containing detailed notes on the grammatical and liturgical portion by my esteemed colleague Pandit Ayodhyanath Sanyal, Vuakaranacaarya, within a short time. But unfortunately due to unforseseen circumstances, protracted press strike for an unusually long time the publication was held up and though it is now going to see the light of the dat at long last, my esteemed colleague is no more with us, which is a matter of infinite regret for us all.

Pandit Ayodhyanath Sanyal, who passed away a couple of months back, was a distinguished scholar both in Veda and Vyakaran, who had no peer in this field in our part of the country and so our loss is irreparable. However, what he has left in the form of detailed expositon of the highly technical Vedic and grammatical intricacies will remain as a lasting monument to his scholarship, ever testiying to his keen and original insight in these untrodden fields of sanskritic studies. Those who will go through his expositions will be struck by his daring critical acumen, which has enable him to find out manyplaces the lapses of even the great undisputed commentator, Sayanacarya.

I am sure this critical exposition will go to a long way tohelp not only the Post-graduate students but also the teacher and research scholars in properly understanding the implication and formation and formation of the vedic words and the liturgical application of the Vedic hymns. The stupendous labour undertaken by my late esteemed colleague will be amply rewarded if the students take up earnestly a critical study of the Vedas with the help of the guiding light he has left for us.

Thanks are due to the Publication Selection of our University headed by Sri R.K. Palit for seeing the work through the press. Sree Saraswaty Press Ltd., in spite of many handicaps, have fulfilled their obligations for which they deserve our sincerest thanks. Sri Ramsadhan Mukherjee, M.A. has, as usual, taken great care in going through the proofs and I think this will earn him the blessings of his departed teacher.
