Book Description

About the Book

Essays on Panini is a collection of papers presented at the "Colloquim on Panini" held at te Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla during May 1995. the papers investigate the formal principles adopted or devised by Panini in his grammatical study of Sanskrit leading on to a systemic presentation of the complex data of a natural language and taking the first steps to formalization long before such a procedure came to be known to the Greeks and Europeans. Though a large amount of writing on Panini has been done to explain his methods it has been restricted to piecemeal treatment of the rules and the derivation involved in his famous Astadhyayi. It is perhaps for the first time that in this volume we have an overall view of Panini's formal methodology.

The essay presented here will be of great help not only to scholars of Sanskrit grammar but also to those who adopt the meta-linguistic procedures of Panini for investigating the algorithmic structures of natural languages by means of computer programmes.
