Book Description
The Gujarati literary scene today is marked by mixed and even contradictory features. There is, on the one hand, a sense of frustration, of things having reached a dead-end. This can be traced to exit of eminent literary figures like Umashankar Joshi and Suresh Joshi during the last few years. Together they summed up the cultural ethos of significant phase of the post-independence era, of the period of moldemist writing which covered the last three decades, beginning with the 'sixties.
As a counter-point to this, there is also a feeling of expectancy in the air. For one thing, writers like Suresh Dalal and Harindra Dave have now definitely established themselves as major figures to give a specific character and a sense of direction to younger talents. In addition to being intrinsically good writers, they are, both of them, excellent communicators, quite uninhibited in their over-all stance as literary figures. Both of them work in the lyric genre primarily, and are prolific in their contribution to journalistic writing. Both are, again Bombay based.
