Book Description

About the Book

According to dictionary, an all-rounder is a person who is good at everything. At the same time, an English proverb says that one who is a jack of all trades is master of none. But, in cricket, an all-rounder is simply an all-rounder. No other word can replace the qualities that an all-rounder embodies. An all-rounder is a rare entity. He is a test class batsman and a test class bowler. He is a front line batsman and a front line bowler of the team. He is not necessarily a batsman with highest test runs or a bowler with highest test wickets. But he is a player who is competent to win a test match for his team sometimes as a bowler, sometimes as a batsman and sometimes as a bowler and a batsman. But, in a glamour of one-day matches and an overflow of one-day cricket utility, players like bowlers-batters or batters-bowlers have emerged in large numbers. But, a genuine all-rounder is different from them. He can change the complexion of the game with his bowling, batting and fielding. The history of the game has only a few all-rounders of this quality. The present book includes 16 great all-rounders after the Second World War because it was only after the Second World War that the concept of specialization began. World records were made, the game got popularized and the controversies crept in. This book includes three Indian all-rounders - Mankad, Kapil Dev and Durrani along with the greats like Miller, Sobers, Benaud, Hadlee, Imran, Botham, Flintoff, Kallis, etc.
