Preface In the era of globalization tourism has many dimensions dealing with the issues of social and cultural change, development, political economy, natural resource management and ecology. In Indian sense, tourism was perceived as tirthabhraman (travel for pilgrimage) that may be considered as part of the civilizational study. In the present context, the earlier perception has been changed to new terminology paryatan (tourism) that includes all categories of tourism - religious, historical, heritage, cultural, business, eco-tourism, etc. This book is an outcome of the study on Aurangabad - Ajanta - Ellora tourism region under Xth National Plan Project "Cultural Dimension of Tourism". The epicenter of this tourism region is Aurangabad, the 'City of Gates', which is considered as the gateway of famous world heritage sites of 'Ajanta' and 'Ellora'. From historical point of view this tourism centre is important for assemblage of Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist and Jain sculptures, arts, paintings, temples, monuments, etc. spread in Aurangabad, Ajanta, Ellora, Daulatabad, Khultabad, Paithan of 'Marathawada' eco-cultural zone of Maharashtra state.
