Book Description
Taken together the essays in the present volume seek to focus on a wide range of literary creativity which highlight this assertion. They range from the Oriya Bhagavata, Bhima Bhoi, a blind tribal poet, Tagore and Kumaran Asan to Rilke, Camus and Carlos Fuentes. Some of the essays were presented in national and international seminars and subsequently published. They look into the nature of creativity and the mechanism of discovering the inscape of imagination and emotion. They emphasise the role of time in literature, and the role of literature in time. In another age both the roles seemed fairly clear and simple. Today, the author feels, perhaps we can be e of neither.
Recipient of many prestigious laurels as an outstanding poet (Sahitya Akademi Award, the Kumaran Asan Poetry Award, the Soviet Land Nehru Award, Sarala Award etc.) he is a doctorate in social anthropology. Anthologies of his poems have appeared in all Indian languages, in English, and in several European languages like French, German, Spanish, Swedish, Danish and Romanian.
Dr. Mahapatra has edited nine anthologies of the oral poetry of the Indian tribes. A former Homi Bhaba Fellow, he has also been Fellow at Harvard and Cambridge universities. Dr. Mahapatra was associated with the Sahitya Akademi as a member of its Executive Board and the Bharatiya Jnanapith as a member of its Central Selection Committee. He is now member of the National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO.
