Preface On the occasion of the Birth Centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, it was decided to organise a National Seminar under the auspices of the Institute of Kannada Studies of the University of Mysore. It was appropriate that the Institute, devoted to the promotion of Language and Literature, should organise a seminar which had a close bearing on such studies. Hence, the subject chosen for the seminar, namely "Gandhiji in Indian Literature". Representatives of the seventeen languages recognised by the National Sahitya Akademi (It has since recognised three more languages) were specially invited to participate in the Seminar. The main objectives of the Seminar were: (i) to assess the impact of Gandhiji on Indian Literature; and (ii) to get acquainted with Gandhiji's personality as depicted in the various literatures. Some of these languages had two representatives while others had a single representative. Besides these literary representatives, a few anthropologists and socio logists also participated in the seminar.
