Fasts and festivals play a very significant role in the lives of Hindus. In spite of the fact that most of these can, directly or indirectly, be called as religious, none of them are mandatory. One is free to observe/celebrate these as per one's convenience, without earning anybody's ire. And yet, most Hindus observe/celebrate these fasts and festivals with great enthusiasm.

This book provides outlines of the popular fasts and festivals associated with different parts of the vast Hindu land, including basic information, significance and related rituals of these as well as about the legends which led to the inclusion of these in the Hindu almanac. Besides, the book contains a chapter titled "Hindu Customs and Traditions" giving elementary information on the common customs and traditions observed by Hindus.
