About the Book Studies in Culture, Linguistics and Speechology is a volume of essays garnered to felicitate a celebrated indologist and linguist Prof. Moti Lal Gupta. The articles contained in the Festschrift are contributed by those who have had the good fortune to be students of Prof. Gupta as well as by some of the learned com munities who have had the pleasure of making his acquintance during his tours abroad. Prof. Gupta's devotion and affection to his students, foreign and native, is pro verbial, and he has shared lasting friendships with scholars from all over the world.
Besides contributing to the promotion of research into Indian culture, Prof. Gupta has also been keen to follow the latest develop ments in linguistics and allied studies. He has thus helped to broaden the awareness of foreign scholars as well as to contribute to the expansion of linguistics and cultural studies in India. The breadth of Prof. Gupta's interests is duly reflected in the variety of papers which have been collected together in the present volume.
About the Author As it was also the vehement desire of the editors, both Dr. A.W. Entwistle and Dr. P.L. Menaria to retain the doting memories of their learned preceptor, the present volume is admittedly at fitting tribute to Prof. Gupta in recognition of his long and distinguished career as a teacher and scholar, and what else has been bequeathed from him.
Preface I was delighted when I heard of plans to compile a volume of essays by those who have had the good fortune to be students of Prof. Moti Lal Gupta as well as by some of the many scholars who have had the pleasure of making his acquintánce during his tours abroad. Since he began teaching in his home town of Bharatpur, later while he was a lecturer in Hindi at the University of Rajasthan, and more recently as a participant in international seminars and conferences, he has shared lasting friendships with scholars from all over the world.
