Book Description

Preface
IN THIS book, I have critically analysed the following:

Chomsky's preference for mentalism, his emphasis that rules of language are mentally represented, or that native speakers have unconscious knowledge of rules of language. And from this, Chomsky's jump to the conclusion about the privacy of language. Next is his emphasis on competence (knowledge of language) as opposed to performance and creativity of language. Further, Chomskey's account of unconscious knowledge of language. Finally, his innateness hypothesis.

I am grateful to my teacher Dr Soumitra Basu, Professor of Philosophy, Jadavpur University as well as to my father Dr Kalyan Sengupta, former Professor of Philosophy, Jadavpur University for their interest in this book. Also, many thanks are due to my teacher David E. Cooper, Emeritus Professor of University of Durham, England and his book Knowledge of Language which enabled me to further my knowledge of language. I must also be grateful to my mother, Dr. Ananya Sengupta for inspiring me to engage in this book.
