Book Description
Kurinji is a socio-historical novel conceived in the background of the political history of Thanjavoor in the early part of the nineteenth century. The author has put his knowledge of music to good use in the novel while introducing great musicians like Muthuswamy Deekshitar and Thyagaraja as characters. The theme of the novel is the impact of Carnatic music on the common man. The author shows how it is possible to transcend the barriers of caste and creed with the help of music. This he does with the help of his protagonist Kurinji―a dalit girl, who scales the heights of art encouraged and guided by her master Muthuswamy Deekshitar.
Kove Manisekaran (b. 1927) is a rare combination of a musician, a novelist, a playwright, a script writer and a filmmaker. He is the author of more than 150 novels, several short story collections and plays besides having scripted and directed three feature films and edited four popular Tamil weeklies.
