About The Book

Edassery Govindan Nair (1906-1974) is a leading poet of Malayalam who pioneered the transition from romanticism to realism along with N.V. Krishna Warrier. His poems 'Panimutakkam' (The Strike) and 'Kalyana Putava' (Marriage Robe) were widely appreciated for their lyrical charm, suggestiveness and poetic propriety.

Karutha Chettichikal (Black Hawkerwomen) and Puthen Kalavum Arivalum (The Fresh Clay Pot and the Scythe) are some of his renowned poetry collections. The poet is always on the side of the suffering humanity. He is rightfully considered the poet of force and vitality and the poet of new humanism. He is also an accomplished narrative poet. He has six collections of poems to his credit among which Kavilepattu (The song at the shrine) won the Sahitya Akademi Award. He has written six major plays and many one act plays.

About the Author

M. Leelavathy (b. 1927) the recipient of various honors including Sahitya Akademi Award for her Kavitadhwani is a well-known critic in Malayalam. She has published more than 15 books in Malayalam (criticism, biography, essays and translations). Here she brings out the charm of Edassery's poetry. Effectively analyses its social content and critically evaluates the place of Edassery in Malayalam poetry.
