Book Description

Foreword

Prof. Dr. Rajbali Pandey, my erstwhile colleague at the Banaras Hindu University has tried to fulfil a great need by writing a brief, yet comprehensive and simple, introductory booklet on Hinduism. It is perhaps the most long-lived, vital and, in fact, immortal, yet most neglected and under patronised religion of the world. According to late Prof. J. B. Pratt, it is the only religion which tends to survive the impact of modern science. It is the only religion which tends to be appreciated and accepted without any attempt at proselytising, without any tempting promises of gold and woman, without any state support and without a terrorising sword as a precursor. It is a religion which equally appeals to the wisest and the most ignorant. Unfortunately there is a great lack of popular literature on Hinduism. There is hardly any introductory booklet which may in a nutshell tell the curious non Hindus, at a glance, what a great religion this is. A graded series of books written by authentic scholars, doing full justice to all the aspects of Hinduism very much needed to spread its knowledge and remove the misconceptions prevalent in non-Hindu circles. Scholars like Dr. Pandey alone can properly undertake this work. I hope the work he has begun from the lowest rung of the ladder will be completed in due course. The present booklet eminently serves the purpose for which it has been written.
