Foreword

Encouraged by the popularity received by the first volume of the stories from Kathasaritasagara, we are now presenting to our readers the second volume of the same. This volume contains a larger number of stories of varied interest. The themes of the stories are mostly romantic and ethical, illustrating how the mysterious hand of Fate plays with the lives of human beings. Though the foremost object of the story-teller here is entertainment, it appears that he also wants to instruct, the reader in the intricacies of life and thus help him avoid the pitfalls. We hope that the present volume also will prove an enjoyable reading and will appeal to the public.

Due to non-availability of diacritical marks in the particular types used in this book, a list of the Sanskrit words occuring in the book is given in the beginning along with the diacritical marks as an aid to pronunciation.

We are thankful to Dr. Singh and Dr. Ramakrishna of the English Department, who kindly went through the translation of the stories and made valuable suggestions.

Our thanks are also due to the Manager and the staff of the Commercial Printing Press for printing the work carefully and promptly.
