Sujan Singh can be truly called the pioneer of the modern Punjabi short story. His short story portray his hard struggle in life and give a vivid picture of the sufferings of the down-trodden and the middle-classes. He was known to be a writer of socialistic leanings and an expert in the psycho-analytic destination of characters. He wrote about nine collections of short stories. He was a versatile prose writer too and published two collections of light essays and three collections of the historical stories concerned with Sikh Gurus and Sikh scripture. His magnetic personality inspired the new generation of Punjabi literature. He was the organizer of Kendri (Central) Punjabi Lekhak Subha. He was the recepient of Sahitya Akademi award and also got the title of Sharomani Punjabi Lakhak by the language department of Punjab.
Kulbir Singh Kaang the author of this monograph, is a well-known critic and prose-writer. He has introduced the form of lyrical essay and is considered to be a master of this genre. He is a sketch-writer too, and is known as fearless critic. He has, so far, got published 44 original, 12 translated and 11 edited books.
