Book Description

Introduction

We are aware that organ transplantations are no more exciting news, modern medical science has made rapid stride beyond this and at present it is enthusiastically exploring the field of stem cell research and its possible application as a means of providing a permanent cure for degenerating diseases.

This is being accomplished by one school of researchers while another school is involved in finding out a possible and easily available means by way of employing the nature in this task, i.e. taking advantage of plants and their enzymes. There comes Ayurveda in picture. This age old science never showed such promising progress in the recent medical history. This produces a very striking paradoxical scenario where this ancient science of life is juxtaposed with modern medical science. Like stem cells possibility of use of plant enzymes in triggering the regeneration of cells in failed organs may not be a wild dream. Recently scientific proof about the role of Curcuma longa (curcumin) in altering the malignant nature of cancer cells is one such example though it is still beyond speculation how this task is achieved genetically.

Diabetes mellitus does not require introduction any more. Statistics from various national and international health agencies including WHO has revealed so much about it and predicted such a gloomy picture that hardly can one ignore this metabolic syndrome. Rapidly altering diet habits and life style along with drastically unfavorable environmental changes have played such a crucial role in raising the incidence of this disorder that a large section of population is at the risk of developing it. Socio-economic burdens are imaginable. However, the realization is not drawn upon when a large number of young children, on getting affected by this disease, would have to spend the remaining part of their life with this. Temptation for various kinds of food and materialistic life style are far many while living a disciplined life with well controlled diet is not at all easy.
