Book Description
Madhavanidanam of Srimadavakara alongwith Madhukosa commentary, chapters 33-69, are translated into English and published as Part-2, with the reputation gained by Part-1 (1-33 chapters) Dr. P. Himasagara Chandra Murthy has put in all efforts to bring out part 2 also with the same lucidity. It is expected that this volume also reaches out to the international medical community and make it understand the intricacies of Ayurvedic approach in diagnosis of diseases.
Madhukosa commentary of this part is replete with the quotations from the unseen works of Bhoja, Videha etc. thus this work becomes highly valuable means of utility. The students practioners and researchers will definitely find this to be very useful in understanding the diseases in a better manner apart from avoiding the expenditure on modern diagnostic measures. The author and publishers deserve all the commendations for their noble effort which will go a long way in preserving and spreading the indigenous knowledge universally.
Hailing from a Traditional Ayurvedic family, Dr. P. Himasagara Chandra Murthy has possessed his Bam&S from Sri Rangacharya Govt. Ayurvedic college, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh and M.D. (Ayurvededa) from Gujarat Ayurveda University, Jamnagar. He started his career as a teacher in 1979 at B.H. Ayurveda Mahavidhyalaya, Lodra, Gujarat and within short period he shifted to the Ayurveda College, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, where he rose to the position of a principal within 5 years. Since 1989 he is in the Faculty of govt. Ayurvedic college, Vijayawada, A.P. He is now a Professor, Department of Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana and Incharge professor and Head of the P.G. Department of Rasashastra in Vijayawada. He is awardedwith the “captain srinivasa urthy Gold Medal” for his excellence in finding metallic impurities in Mercury through Namburi Phased spot Test (NPST) Though he has specialized in rasashastra, Dr. Murthy has equal proficiency in Samhitas, which he tought for about 10 years and also translated Nidana, Vimana and Sharira sthanas of charaka Samhita along with Chakrapani Commentary into Telugu. His English translation of Sarangadhara Samhita has become famous of its lucid presentation. Dr. Murthy has, to his credit, many research project and presentations. He has also been a member in various universities for studies and examinations.
Since the text and commentary of Madhavanidana is voluminous if to be provided with English translation of the both, it was decided to publish it in two parts. This is apart from the convenience of writing and publishing. The commentary of Madhukosa for chapter 33rd onwards is written by Srikanthadatta the disciple of vijayaraksita. As said by himself, the commentary was almost on the lines of that of majority of them need surgical intervention. Most of the compilation was done from susruta samhita and supported by many words like those written by videha, Bhaoja etc. Thus the Madhukosa commentary in this part serves as ready reference of the words written by these people which are not to be seen outside.
When this task is taken up, many expressed doubt whether I could deliver the goods properly or not. Their doubt have been completely cleared by the publication of 1st volume and many have applauded the way it has been brought out. Continuing the same spirit, the translation of remaining chapters has been taken up and the works is accomplished.
I am deeply indebted to Shri brijmohan Das Gupta for the confidence reposed in me for taking up this task. I had this fortune of being only individual so far who translated the Madhukosa commentary into English.
