About the Book
Ever wondered how much you're missing out on the world of our furry-scaly-muddy-prickly-slippery- ferny-crawly-feathery friends?

Worry not! For, from sky and sea, bedrock and treetop, the best and the bizarre of the plant and animal kingdoms come together in this definitive box set.

Sumptuously illustrated and compiled from India's only national-level quiz on wildlife, these volumes are crammed with baffling questions and curious nuggets of trivia that will leave you asking for more!

Introduction
India: A land of diversity

Even as its population soars past a billion people, the country continues to harbor a mind-boggling diversity of wild flora and fauna. Only seventeen of the world's countries house 70 per cent of the globe's biodiversity. India is one of these 'Mega-diverse' countries-with just 2.4 per cent of the world's land area, it accounts for a massive 7-8 per cent of the entire world's species!

The ten biogeography regions of India also boast a high level of endemism (an endemic plant or animal is one that is confined to a certain region). It is estimated that 12 per cent of India's mammals, 4.5 per cent of birds, 45.8 per cent of reptiles, 55.8 per cent of amphibians and 33 per cent of India's plants are found nowhere else in the world.

Due to increasing threats from a lucrative illegal wildlife market, rapid developmental activities, including industrialization, and immense pressure from a growing human population, today many of India's species and their habitats are Critically Endangered. Yet, a small army of committed individuals is battling hard to protect our last remaining wilderness areas and conserve our precious biodiversity.
